How many litters do you have each year?

Between two and four at the moment. 

 

What are the positive traits of the breed? 

Longhaired dachshunds were bred with German Spaniels to create the long flowing hair. Their fur is soft and silky and grows longest on the neck, chest, ears and legs. Longhaired dachshunds tend to be the quietest and sweetest nature probably from their Spaniel heritage. Dachshunds are curious, lively, charming and brave. They love to play games and a great sense of humor. They are loyal little dogs and very attached to their family. Dachshunds attract devoted followers who would never consider having any other breed. 

 

What are the negative traits of the breed? 

Dachshunds can be very jealous when they want attention and they can be possessive of their toys. They are alert watchdogs who do not take kindly to strangers intruding on their domain. Dachshunds get bored easily leading to digging, excessive barking, chewing and other behaviors.

 

What is the life expectancy of a mini dachshund? 

12 - 14 years and often longer. 

 

How much grooming does a longhaired dachshund need? 

It's advisable to give them  a quick brush at least once a day. It will help to minimize shedding getting on your furniture too. Longhaired dachshunds don't need to be bathed very often. Once every 3 months or more if they get dirty should be more than enough. 

 

How much exercise will my puppy need? 

The general rule for puppies is 5 minutes of activity for every month of age up to twice a day. In other words a 3 month old puppy should be doing 15 minutes of activity at a time twice a day. 

 

How often do I have to feed my puppy? 

Under 6 months of age it's advisable to feed your puppy 3 times a day. Small meals more regularly to maintain their energy levels. After 6 months of age you can change feeding to twice a day. 

 

What written information on diet and rearing do you provide? 

Our dachshunds are on Royal Canin food and Royal Canin has a very useful booklet I provide you with for all the rearing and diet information you may need. 

 

What inoculations will the puppy have had once I get the puppy? 

Nobivac DHPPi at six weeks of age. 

 

How often are the puppies dewormed? 

2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks so every second week. 

 

What health problems does the dachshund breed have? 

Because of their long bodies back injuries are common in mini longhaired dachshunds. Dachshunds are also prone to a degenerative eye disease that cause blindness called Progressive Retinal Artophy (PRA). 

 

Have the parents of the puppies been tested for known hereditary problems? 

Yes, our parents of the pups have all been tested for hereditary problems in the breed and all the results are at hand.
